Stick to Sunless Tans

There are approximately 1.3 million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed yearly. There is no mistaking it – ultraviolet (UV) radiation is damaging. Fortunately for the sun-worshippers among us who want to keep their tan … but also want to avoid harmful UV rays, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends self-tanning lotions as a safe alternative to the real thing and our SeneDerm® Shea Butter Body Bronzer with SenePlex® is the only self-tanning product on the market with the anti-aging properties of SenePlex Complex.

Science Behind the Self Tanner

  • Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is currently the only active ingredient approved by the FDA for sunless tanning. It interacts with the proteins in the outer layer of your skin to produce a tan-like appearance without sun exposure.
  • Sorbitan and Sesquioliate are thickening agents that are sometimes known as a synthetic wax.
  • Ceresin is a clay derived thickening agent.
  • Panthenol is a humectant, emollient and moisturizer.
  • Erythrulose is a natural keto-sugar which reacts in complementary combination with DHA (dihydroxyacetone) producing an even, non-streaky and longer tan.

SenePlex Complex is the mechanism that speeds up the cellular renewal process. Producing cells faster is the fundamental process that will produce plumper, firmer, and better looking luminous skin. SenePlex Complex is an acid-free combination that increases skin cell renewal. It increases collagen production by contributing to skin firming. It evens skin tone by visibly minimizing the appearance of minor scaring, discoloration and age-related fine lines. A polysaccharide found in the algae calms irritation and promotes healing. It visibly reduces inflammation and redness of sensitive or irritated skin.

Sunless Tanner Tip

To work properly, DHA must bond with skin cells. It won’t work if your skin is wet or sweaty.

How does SeneDerm® Shea Butter Body Bronzer with SenePlex® work?

SeneDerm Shea Butter Body Bronzer with SenePlex contains Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective self tanning products contain Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. The tan is a chemical reaction between the DHA and the amino acids and proteins in the outer layer on the skin surface. It is not a dye, stain or paint. The reaction is non-toxic and skin safe, without the damage associated with UV exposure. The tan is temporary and will fade gradually over 3 to 10 days.
Some people may be sensitive or allergic to the ingredients found in SeneDerm Shea Butter Body Bronzer. Before covering your entire body, test it out first by dabbing it on a small section of skin. If you notice an uncomfortable reaction, discontinue use at once.

Do I need to apply a sunscreen?

The most important thing to remember about self tanning is that SeneDerm Shea Butter Body Bronzer does not protect your skin against the sun. When using the Body Bronzer, slather yourself with the same amount of sunscreen you would use if you were as pale as a ghost.

If I swim in a chlorinated pool, will my sunless tan fade?

Long exposure to water, with or without chlorine, will fade your sunless tan. Your outer skin cells will start to soak up water, and that dilutes the tanning effect. The longer you are in the water, the more your skin will fade. Using your SeneDerm Shea Butter Body Bronzer regularly over a period of time will saturate the skin better and your sunless tan will hold up longer in water, but it will still be affected. It is reported that applying a waterproof sunscreen before you get in the water prevents the sunless tan from fading as quickly.

Can I hide my scars by self tanning?

Scars are a bit unpredictable. Mostly, they darken very little or not at all. The more recent the scar, the less Body Bronzer it will absorb. Please note that stretch marks are scars! Stretch marks that are a few years old will be disguised by sunless tanners; new ones will not absorb the lotion and may look more prominent (if this gets you down, keep in mind that stretch marks and scars don’t tan in the sun, either – and the sun will impair healing). Your freckles and moles will also darken along with the rest of your skin. In fact, some colorless moles may become significantly darker. This is a sad fact of sunless tanning.

If you’re pregnant or nursing, experts recommend checking with your physician before applying

According to the American Pregnancy Association, DHA is considered safe for pregnant women. However, their editors also say, “The only concern is whether the active ingredient, Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is able to penetrate the skin. Studies do not confirm that it can, but some health care providers encourage women to wait until after the first trimester, just to play it safe.”

Can men also use SeneDerm Shea Butter Body Bronzer with SenePlex?

No. Men should never do anything to improve their appearance. They should avoid shaving, getting haircuts, buying stylish clothing, working out, and brushing their teeth. Otherwise, dating and marriage could result (Of course men can use SeneDerm® Shea Butter Body Bronzer – it is not gender specific!)

Helpful Sunless Tanning Tips

Wear gloves to evenly distribute your self tanning lotion

Gloves will help distribute the tanning lotion evenly without having to worry about tan palms. This will encourage a person to take the time to make sure all of the tanning lotion is applied evenly. If you don’t want to wear gloves, wash your hands at least every five minutes while applying. Use a soapy nailbrush to scrub palms, fingers, and fingernails. (Toothpaste helps to remove color from the palms of your bare hands)

    Exfoliate for a Smooth Color

Rough, dry skin doesn’t take well to artificial tanning and creates an uneven skin tone. First, exfoliate gently with a sea sponge or our Poof! loofah and then take great care to apply the product as smoothly and evenly as possible. Do not shave your legs for several hours before applying sunless tanners. Some folks can get away with it, but if your skin is on the sensitive side, avoid it.

How to Create a Natural Looking Tan

Five to ten minutes after applying the Body Bronzer:

      • Rub areas such as elbows and knees with a little SeneDerm Moisturizing Hand and Body Lotion to lighten the effect.
      • Rub SeneDerm Hand and Body Lotion around wrists and backs of hands to blend with arms.
      • Rub SeneDerm Hand and Body Lotion around ankles and tops of feet to blend with legs.

      Facial Application:

Apply SeneDerm Daytime Moisturizer to your face and neck first, letting it soak in for ten minutes prior to the application of the Body Bronzer. This prevents the Body Bronzer from gathering in areas with fine lines. You can use a makeup sponge to apply the Body Bronzer to the face. Avoid getting product on hair or eyebrows because it can color hair.

WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER THESE APPLICATIONS!

      • To avoid staining clothing, wait about 30 minutes for the product to dry before putting on clothes and try wearing dark clothing to avoid staining.
      • Moisturize your “tan” every day with SeneDerm Hand and Body Lotion (or any other SeneDerm Body Lotion that just might be made available to you soon!)

What about those “special” areas? The skin on your lips and nipples is nearly unaffected by the Body Bronzer. Go right over them during your application. Trying to avoid those areas can lead to an unattractive buildup along their borders.

What about the bikini area? Forget about it. The Body Bronzer will not absorb well there and can look like dirt. And exfoliation is out of the question!

If the Body Bronzer has left you feeling sticky, apply SeneDerm Translucid Powder or Bronzers to your skin thirty minutes to an hour after applying the sunless tanner. Don’t rub it in! Use a large body powder puff to apply.
