Melanoma is the number one cause of cancer death in women aged 25 – 30.

If you don’t need to be convinced about the dangers  of a tan from the sun, you can skip this section. If you still like to lie out by the pool, keep reading.

Leathery skin, wrinkles – does that look healthy?  This is not the look most people want.  Yet that is just what you are headed for if you don’t protect your skin from the sun. If you are not convinced, head to a retirement home in Miami and look around the pool.

There are approximately 1.3 million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed yearly. There is no mistaking it – ultraviolet (UV) radiation is damaging. You’ve heard the warnings about skin cancer but maybe you think it couldn’t happen to you.  And maybe you will dodge that bullet.

Effects of the sun on your skin.

But the leathery skin and wrinkles will surely catch up to you.  Exposure to ultraviolet light, UVA or UVB, from sunlight accounts for 90% of the symptoms of premature skin aging.  On your skin,  sun exposure cause collagen to break down at a higher rate than with just normal  aging. Sunlight damages collagen fibers.

You might not get skin cancer but you will get wrinkles.

In the United States, 1 in 65 people will be diagnosed with melanoma at some point in their life.  Melanoma is the number one cause of cancer death in women aged 25 – 30.  The development of melanoma is related to sun exposure, particularly to sunburns during childhood, and is most common among people with fair skin, blue or green eyes, and red or blond hair.

Don’t think you can skirt the danger by using a tanning bed.  We used to think that the UV rays in a tanning bed weren’t harmful.  Ask anyone who has fallen asleep in a tanning bed if that is true.  Anyway now science has caught up.  International cancer experts have moved tanning beds into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas.  ALL rays in a tanning bed are harmful.

Sorry about the rant and dire tone, but I want to be sure you understand that a tan from the sun is not worth the risk.

Not to mention all the time wasted. But what to do if you still think you look better with a tan?

Enter the Self -Tanner

Self Tanning creams have been around since the 1960s. Orange skin is what people of a certain age picture when they hear the words “self tanner”.  The first self tanning creams would turn many people’s skin orange.  But self tanning lotions have come a long way since then. Now you can get a tan using tanning pills, self-tanner lotions  and bronzers. You can smooth, swipe or spray on a tan ranging in colour from a light bronze glow to  a deep, dark tan.

DHA is the name of the magical ingredient in self-tanners.  Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is currently the most reliable and effective product in sunless tanning. In fact, it is the only product the FDA has approved for sunless tanning. It interacts with the proteins in the outer layer of your skin to produce a tan-like appearance without sun exposure. DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the outermost layer of your skin.

This is a temporary change; when you exfoliate the skin cells (every day you lose millions of skin cells), you lose the DHA affected skin cells.  You lose the tan.

Most self tanners last about 4-5 days.  As each person sheds skin cells at a different rate, each person gets different results from the self tanner.

Every part of your skin that comes in contact with the self tanner will change colour.  For this reason, I advise you wash your hands thoroughly or wear latex gloves when you apply the tanner.

Your technique is key to getting the self tanner to work.  Take time to apply the self tanner for the best results.

Tanning creams often have a smell.  That is the smell of the DHA reacting with the protein in your skin.  Similar to how perfume smells differently on different people, not everyone will notice a smell from the tanner.

Some creams have added fragrance to cover up the smell.  Problem is since you can’t tell how you will react to the DHA, you can’t tell what the smell will be like on you.  I recommend getting a tanning cream without added fragrance.

Application is key to self tanning success

Exfoliation is the key to smooth application.  Remember I said that the self tanner reacts to the protein in your skin cells?  And that when you shed the cells, you lose the tan? If you apply the tanner to skin cells that are about to shed, the tan won’t last long.  Some will advise you to put on a lotion before applying self tanner.  I don’t recommend that. The lotion might prevent the tanning cream from adhering to your skin. To get the best results read this guide to self tanning application.

Timing is also key to good results.  Don’t use a self tanner as you are heading out to a tennis match or about to go to bed.  Make sure you have time to let the product completely react to your skin and “set”.  I wouldn’t apply at 7pm when you  have a big date that night either.  If the product isn’t set fully, it could rub off on your clothes.

Find a good self tanner, follow the results in the guide mentioned above and you are on your way to a beautiful glow!
