Ideas you can use to help choose the right shade of lip liner |
Lip color, especially long lasting lip color, adds the final touch to any makeup application. Lining the lips creates subtle definition and perfects the shape of the lips.
Lip Liner Application Tips
Apply all your other makeup before putting on lip liner and lipstick lip color. This was counter-intuitive to me but it's true!
Draw a thin line along the natural edge of your lips with a lip liner whose color is at most one shade darker than you lip color. (except as below when you a using a lip liner to create a perfect pair of lips)
Start at the center of the upper lip and work outward. Hug the very outer edges to open up thin lips. Line well within the edges to downplay excessively large lips.
Apply your lip color, paying attention to staying within the outlined lips edges.
Lip Liner can be used to create a perfect pair of lips
Small mouth with small lips: Take the lip liner outside the natural lip line. Work slowly and steadily to form a perfect shape. A highlight of a frosted "ice" lip color in the center of the upper and lower lip would also create an impression of fullness.
Large mouth with full lips: Outline with a darker shade of lip liner just inside the natural contours of the lips. Apply a lip color of a slightly lighter shade within the outline. Use medium toned subdued shade lip colors and avoid dark browns, plums, electric brights or pale shimmer shades.
Full upper lip: Outline with a darker shade of lip liner just inside the natural contour of the upper lip. Outline the lower lip just outside its natural contour and emphasize by filling in with a lighter shade of lip color.
Full lower lip:Outline upper lip with lip liner just outside its natural contour. Outline the lower lip with lip liner just inside its natural contour.
Wide mouth: Apply lip liner, stopping slightly before the corners of the mouth are reached.
When choosing the shade of lip liner, it's important to choose a color close to your lipstick lip color. Don't use a liner much darker than your lip color, because as the lip color wears you're left with just an outline of lip liner.
